I. Black Arabesques
II. Roundel in Red
III. Little Green Zigzags

The intricacy of abstract patterns is fascinating. Simple shapes and colors comprise their forms, but the unique assemblage of these elements brings complexity and richness to the overall image. The three movements of this piece draw inspiration from the energetic motion frozen in time by each pattern's still state.

An arabesque is a surface decoration based on rhythmic linear patterns of scrolling and interlacing elements, often foliage, tendrils, or lines. The constantly running figure in Black Arabesques swirls around itself, much like a decorative pattern that has no definitive beginning or end.

Roundel in Red draws on circular motion and repetition—a roundel is a circular shape, often featuring concentric rings. The pianist plays a repeating perfect fourth in the center of the keyboard almost continuously to emulate the unbroken circle. Bell-like chords punctuate the ostinato as the piece fluctuates between storm-like outbursts and calm, delicate gestures.

Syncopation, sharp articulation, and rhythmic grooves characterize the final movement, Little Green Zigzags. The playful and punchy chords bounce up and down the keyboard, eventually giving way to more bombastic gestures near the end.
